A pair of frames from the 17th century French Revolution.
What you are seeing (to the right) is a before and after of a corner repair.
Both frames required refitting and corner braces. One needed to be completely re-gilded, and both were cracked in numerous places with large chunks missing.
The old gilding was cleaned and there is a visible difference as the gold is exposed. All of the damaged areas were reconstructed, filled and blended with a seamless fit . It takes molds and hand carving for these types of repairs.
As you can see, there is no visible distinction between where the frame was restored and original finish.
